Upcoming Hands Korea get together

So the time has come for another get together. I am planning a trip to watch a baseball game at Jamsil Stadium on Oct 1st. The game will start at 5pm and it will be the Doosan Bears against the LG Twins. The price of tickets are 12,000 won. We will need to RSVP tickets because it will probably be a popular game. We will need to purchase the tickets about a week in advance depending on how many people are going. Please send me an email if you would like to join us for the baseball game. Feel free to bring your friends along too.

We will be meeting at Sports Complex subway station which is off of line 2 station number 218. We will meet outside subway exit number 6 at 2pm Sat Oct 1st. Here is the link for the Seoul subway. http://mappery.com/map-of/Seoul-Subway-Map-3. Sports Complex Station is on the bottom right hand side of the green line. Please make sure to be on time so we can get some good seats. The seats are first come first serve. And if we have enough people we should get some airtime on TV too! I will be sending out another email on how to make payment for the tickets. First I just want to get a rough head count of how many people would be attending. I am hoping to expect at least 30 people. Its going to be a great night out, and an awesome chance to meet new people. This means at least another 29 new fb friends hahaha jkjk. Hope to meet you all in person finally!

Also it will be a 3 day weekend that week, so if you guys are planning to spend the weekend in Seoul please let me know, and I can help you book a room at the hostel. The costs range from about 22,000 won – 28,000 won a night. Most of the hostels are in the Hongdae area which is off line 2 the green line on the upper left hand side. Lots of pubs and clubs in this area. Also a lot of great places to eat.

Cheers,

Hands Korea

Chuseok Holiday (Korean Thanksgiving)

Hello Everyone,

Chuseok is one of Korea’s most largely celebrated holidays. It is a time when families and friends gather to share food and enjoy their time together, giving thanks to their ancestors for the year’s bountiful harvests. This years Chuseok will be celebrated on the 11th – 13th of September. These days mark prime time for foreigners to tour Korea’s cities and experience Korea’s culture while all the bustling crowds are away visiting family relatives.

A popular sport that is played during Chuseok holidays is ssireum. In the past, the strongest of the villagers gathered to hold wrestling competitions. The sport of wrestling on sand while being surrounded by spectators has become a traditional favorite in Korea. Today, Ssireum (Korean wrestling) competitions are still held as a folk competition, a one-on-one game to determine the strongest man in Korea. Some of you might know the MC Kang Ho Dong who was once a ssireum champion. You have probably seen him on Korean tv shows with a Mohawk haircut.

A common snack eaten during Chuseok is songpyeon. This rice cake is prepared with rice or non-glutinous rice powder that is kneaded into the perfect size, then filled with sesame seeds, beans, red beans, chestnuts, and a host of other nutritious foods. There is an old Korean saying that says that the person who makes the most beautiful songpyeon will meet a good-looking spouse. So give it a go and try to make a batch of songpyeon. Hahah for first timers you wont be so lucky to meet a good-looking spouse. Here is the link on how to make songpyeon. http://english.visitkorea.or.kr/enu/FO/FO_EN_6_5_2_6.jsp

Most stores and places of business are closed on Chuseok, so make sure to purchase anything you need ahead of time. A number of major tourist sites in Seoul remain open during the holidays and even offered Chuseok events and performances, so make sure to check them out.

Here is a list of things to do in Seoul for Chuseok.

Note : Most of these places will be open for the holidays but you should call ahead and double check to make sure. Enjoy your holidays and have a safe and fun vacation.

Best Regards,

Hands Korea
